Welcome. I'm glad you find it congenial here. I hope you will always find it to be so. We have a wide selection of liberal and progressive belief represented here, and we even have some folks who might actually be centrists.

As I am sure you know, history is replete with human beings barbaric behavior. The last 60 years have sort of been a very unusual period of Ozzie and Harriet living and intellectual growth. We got rid of segregation (more or less) and racism, sexism, agism and are close to getting rid of gay bashing. But a new storm has risen in the east. I think it is fair to say, without engaging in hyperbole, that we are very close to becoming a plutocratic society with Orwellian dangers. So this is a period when we need honest, polite, discussion among thoughtful people regarding how we are to procede. And it is a tricky time politically and economically. I have been on SI for over 12 years. I came here because I have traded Canadian resource stocks for over 30 years. But I am also a 50 year liberal democrat, and have always been deeply involved in politics, starting with my hippie days in the 60's, and up and through running for our state legislature; and helping several democratic governors and democratic candidates run for office in my state. It is sad to say, but this is the only viable thread on all of SI (that I know of) where a polite liberal or progressive can speak freely without fear of getting banned for their ideas. There are a zillion right wing threads, but one posts liberal ideas there at their peril. So I am glad when I see a new progressive or moderate join the discussion, who can add ideas, because I have a hunch things are about to get pretty rocky going forward, from a possible depression to a takeover by the extreme right wing.
