Ayn Rand was a weird old bat, but she understood collectivism, very well.

Although she seems to be admired mostly these days for her defense of capitalism, I was most impressed with her defense of intellectual freedom, e.g., Anthem, We the Living.

Collectivists try to make you think the way they want you to think by telling you that you are immoral to think otherwise than the way they do. If they can't brainwash you, they will try to shut you up by isolating you, telling you and each other that your views are beyond the pale, are not worthy of any consideration.

Actually, I think most collectivists believe this. Only their ideas are worthy. If you disagree, you are evil and a threat to humanity. This is, by the way, not limited to any political flavor. Authoritarianism respects no political boundaries.
