I don't drink but I thought Winston Churchill's view on prohibition was pretty interesting:

He said (something like this): "It was an affront to everything good about western civilization."

He expressed this view when Great Britain refused to prevent British ships from delivering booze outside the US territorial waters on the East Coast.
