ETA for NT 5.0? Now it's anyone's guess zdnet.com

According to sources close to the Redmond, Wash., company, Microsoft has stopped trying to predict any kind of delivery date for NT 5.0. The release of Beta 2, which in September was slated for a Dec. 15 drop, is now dubbed "to be determined," the sources said. ...

If Microsoft stays true to prior product release patterns, it will be next to impossible for the company to deliver NT 5.0 in 1998 if Beta 2 does not ship until midyear at best. OEMs need gold, or final, code for operating systems by summer in order to test and pre-load a new operating system in time to ship it by the end of the year. And Beta 2 will almost certainly not be the final beta release of a major operating system upgrade, which NT 5.0 is.

Mysterious Merced is starting to look like a pretty safe bet here. NT2k?

Cheers, Dan.

Compaq eyes AMD's K6 for Presario line zdnet.com

This is somewhat off topic, except for friends and foes of the monopolistic death grip. Maybe someday there'll only be one.

Compaq, the world's No. 1 computer maker, is developing an aggressive strategy for its consumer-oriented Presario line of desktops and notebooks for 1998 that includes AMD's K6 processor, according to sources. The Houston-based computer maker has been disclosing to customers over the past few weeks its plans to outfit the majority of the Presario family with multiple iterations of the K6 next year. ...

Compaq aside, AMD has been diligently signing up PC makers for the K6, including IBM Personal Computer Co., Digital Equipment Corp. and Acer America Corp.

Well, AMD must have a good story on its production problems. The street price differential between the K6 166 MMX and the P5 166 MMX has almost vanished. The 200 part still has some differential, but the K6 233 is actually more expensive than the P5 233. Beats me.

Cheers, Dan.
