what happened between january 1975 and sept 1976?

  • Total credit annual growth rate really started to take off and was at about 9% by Sept 76 from 5% in Jan 76.
  • Velocity also started a big move up in mid/late '76 (don't tell H <g>)
  • "Total money" (M3+credit+gov't debt) bottomed in 4/75 at under 8% and was at 12% by Sept 76.
  • CPI bottomed in Nov 76 (peak at 12.3% in Dec '74) at about 4.8%
  • PPI bottomed in Oct 76 at about 3.5% (peak Oct '74 at 23.3%).
  • Carter elected in Nov <g>
  • MSM anti-gold articles continued - "bull is over".
  • IMF & CB sales continued, and most metal bulls were scared of them - "shock & awe"

I don't recall any gold bugs or bulls that expected or called the bottom around $100 in '76. There may have been some, just don't recall any. '76 wasn't a good year for me - lost my father in Feb and the year didn't get better later.
