Since it takes an absolute majority of electors to elect the President, that in and of itself leads to binary elections. Winner doesn't need to take all but more than half of the electors.

Which has lead, on more than one occasion, to the President being elected by less than a majority of the population.

A lot of people don't like this, but the only way to amend the Constitution is by ratification by three fourths of the states, and the small states don't want it for the reasons I described.

The majority in the big states never get their way on this one, and they've never liked it.
