I am not saying the functionality is as good as MS Office. Far from it. 4K shouldn't choke anything these days. Are you sure it is not 4MB rather than 4KB. Just out of curiosity I created an empty .xls file MS Excel and it is 17K.
We changed to google email and office at work. There was an outrage in the beginning until the people got used to it. Now the business goes the same, there are no complains and we are saving hundreds of thousands per year.

google spreadsheet supports only up to 1000 lines at this time, so they say. Try splitting your spreadsheet in multiple tabs.
