ITRI predicts 43% growth for Taiwan
semiconductor industry next year

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's semiconductor industry remains robust, with the island's total IC production expected to grow by about 43% in 1998, according to figures released at a press event held today by the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), based in Hsinchu.

In total, ITRI projects Taiwan's IC production to grow from $3.95 billion in 1996 to $4.9 billion in 1997, and then to about $7 billion in 1998. The island's total IC production is projected to hit $9.8 billion by 2000.

Taiwan's IC growth in 1998 will come from both DRAM and wafer foundry business, said Alfred Wang, who works in the planning department at ITRI. At present, Taiwan's wafer foundry and DRAM businesses each make up 40% of the island's total IC output, Wang said.

"In 1998, we expect total foundry sales in Taiwan to grow by 25% to 30%, while DRAM revenues [on the island] will grow by 20%," Wang added.

Interactive TV is a step closer to reality following the announcement that Sun Microsystems [SUNW] and OpenTV will team up to design an advanced set-top box, the first such partnership announced since OpenCable. The box will be based on the OpenTV interactive TV operating environment and Sun's microSPARC and JavaChip processors. Sun expects to deploy the boxes through a set-top manufacturer in '98.
