Iowa Politics Insider: NBC poll: Romney Cain lead in Iowa
A new NBC News/Marist poll shows former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney holding a slight and uncertain lead in Iowa over businessman Herman Cain.In the Hawkeye State, Romney is favored by 23 percent of likely Republican caucusgoers — identified based on interest, chance of voting and past participation. Cain gets 20 percent.

They are followed by Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 11 percent and Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, each at 10 percent. Sixteen percent remain undecided.

Among tea party supporters — who make up half of all likely Iowa caucus-goers — Cain leads Romney, 31 to 15 percent. And among those who “strongly” support the tea party, Cain’s margin is a whopping 41 to 7 percent.

The survey also shows Iowa voters focused more on a candidate’s issues and values than experience and electability.

Meanwhile Tuesday, Romney's campaign announced that he will return to Iowa on Oct. 20. The trip, his third to the Hawkeye State this year, comes less than three months before the GOP caucuses.
