Civil rights marches are part of the time-honored orderly process of political change in America.

As I have posted before, we see them all the time here in Washington, DC. They don't turn violent. But if the protestors break the law, they get put into DC central lockup. With the real criminals. Not a fun place to be. I am constantly pleasantly surprised at how tolerant the DC government is when it comes to such. I know a lot of DC cops. As blue collar workers in a city with financial problems, they probably sympathize with OWS, as long as the protestors don't cause trouble. Otherwise, off to jail.

There were violent confrontations in the 1960's in small towns in places like Alabama where the use of violence to subjugate African Americans was systematic and part and parcel of the entire way of life there.

There have been violent confrontations against union organizers where the use of violence was tolerated by local authorities.

In response, Congress and Presidents used federal authority to supercede local authority, which strengthened federal power. If the local courts would not prosecute malefactors, the federal courts did, and do. The people who were prosecuted were not the protestors, but the ones who attacked them.

The right to peaceful assembly is guaranteed by the First Amendment. March on, OWS! You've got the right to fight the powers that be.
