Five Facts About the Occupy Wall Street Movement

Occupy Wall Street is a phenomenon sweeping across America. Some have referred to it as the liberal answer to the tea party, a wave of liberal patriotism, and others have decried it as angry people whining about their plight. Whether you love it or hate it, it's news. Here are five potentially damaging things you may not know about the "#Occupy" movement:

• Despite the protests that this is a grass roots movement, #Occupy was born in Canada. Adbusters, a magazine and self-described "culture jammer" group based in Vancouver, British Columbia, started the movement when it created a poster depicting a dancer posed on the shoulders of the Wall Street bull with demonstrators posed in what seemed a fog of tear-gas descending on her position. The poster asked a single question, "What is our one demand?" At the bottom were the words "#occupywallstreet September 17th. Bring tent." [sic] Activist groups around America spread the word virally through social networks and a leaderless movement was born.

• The #Occupy protesters have no official list of demands. Some have suggested lists of demands, but mostly the movement is made up of people who are upset with how the system is working and wish to join together in a display of frustration and anger.

• In support of the #Occupy movement, the hacker group known as Anonymous has issued a threatthat it will cause disruptions on the New York Stock Exchange as retaliation for the hundreds of arrests that have taken place since the start of the protests. Despite numerous arrests around the world, the hacker group continues to wreak havoc on organizations that it believes responsible for injustices. In August, the unscrupulous group released the personal information of BART employees after BART jammed the cell phone service of would-be protesters in order to squelch protests

• #Occupy movement is supported by some of the biggest labor unions in the nation, including the AFL-CIO, and the United Auto workers. Traditionally, labor unions and corporations have been at odds, neither missing an opportunity to turn the screws to the others, but both socially dominating power houses in their own right. The union affiliation with and support with the #Occupy protesters has caused even some supporters of the movement to turn sour on their continued involvement.

• The future of the #Occupy movement is uncertain. What is certain is that some people have taken to the streets in anger, and they are being propped up by controversial if not unsavory characters that in some fashion or another diminish the message (if there is one) and taint the totality of what is.
