When SHTF gold will be in very short supply and then no supply at all. There will be a panic to get in once prices will be jumping 200-500 dollars a day. People will not be walking, they will run searching for a place where they can get some metal (maybe you will be able to observe changed behavior of the guy that walks the dog by your house -g- )

Under this scenario outright nationalization of gold mines cannot be ruled out. I am also trying to think outside the box. One thing that I am looking at as a possibility are covert nationalizations. It would go like this:

1. News comes out about massive accounting fraud - overstated reserves and revenues - at XYZ gold mine and CEO arrested

2. Price plunges by 90%

3. Government proxy offshore LLC takes over the gold mine (or maybe Goldman Sachs proxy)

4. Gold mine now private company (government owned by private proxy), old documents shredded, CEO released and no further information available to the public on operations of the company.

5. Gold production shipped to the Fed in DC or a vault in the basement of Goldman Sachs/JPM headquarters - take your pick.

POG right back to the 1680 Maginot Line. I bet they close it here for the week just to keep everything up in the air (and maybe the SPX at 1220 for the same effect).
