(btw: you know that Smoothsail is my Mom, right?)

yes, i've always figured that's where you got your smarts. :)

So from the outside, my Mom looked counter-culture, but she was really quite conservative.

i had a friend who was a cowboy by day, and a hippie at night.

you're lucky you had a mom that pointed you in the right direction. that's what a good parent is supposed to do. if you look at the animal world, the 'good' parents are the ones that teach their offspring the best about how their world works. those are the ones that have the best chance to survive.

i think learning economics is the best way to understand how 'our' world works. almost all my life i didn't know about economics. i didn't have to (or so i thought), because all i had to do was find a job to get by in the world. but if i would have understood classical economics, it would have changed my whole world.

if a person understands economics, it's very difficult to remain a socialist. if free market economics were taught in schools, socialism would be an obscure little cult, instead of the big powerful, violent one that it is.

My Mom would probably suggest that my politics have influenced her views more nowadays

And I would agree with that. I mostly tried to avoid talking about politics although I probably have every book ever written about Watergate. I started listening to Dennis Prager when driving to work and Larry Elder coming home and found I agreed with both of them. And then you started talking about being a Libertarian. I always felt you were throwing your vote away.

As you know I grew up in a liberal household. One brother is liberal to the extreme, a sister and her husband are also "democrats" no matter what, another brother is center right but really apolitical and another sister shares my beliefs. Both of my sisters are very religious but don't agree politically.

Awhile back when Geoff and Smithee were in town for mph's funeral, Geoff was loading up the barrels to take on my brother and brother-in-law (we just happened to be having a small family reunion at the same time), when Smithee noticed and changed the subject. Always wondered what that brawl might have looked like. As an example of what it might have been, my brother has made the statement: "I believe everything the NYT prints."

Growing up, we were very aware of Hitler and WWII because the father of a very good friend (to this day) who lived across the street, was a colonel in the army and brought back many war trophies - Nazi flags, uniforms, guns, swords, cat of nine tails, etc. I never had the impression that Hitler was "to the right." The colonel was a hard-core Republican and let everyone know it.
