Banks like GS, whose stock price is fairly secure, are reporting losses cause it's good PR. It's easy to do this: just beef up your loss reserves. When the Republicans have a firmer control of the government, they can convert those fat loss reserves to profits.

Banks like C and BAC with low stock prices that may be forced to raise equity can't afford to do that, so they have to resort to fake profits.
