Joey - You are right on the chance part - all of this is speculation on our part so far as no 'official' announcement has been seen. From what I know about CPQ, they are quite skilled at wringing 'concessions' from suppliers, partly based on the volume they can order, I'm sure. They also take chances, remember they pretty much 'invented' this whole sub 1k PC thing this year, and it has paid off for them (in volume and press, not so much in profits). I'm sure if they do go with AMD, they will be getting 'rock bottom' prices from AMD, and it's for their low end lines. Remember, they make the lion's share of their money on server lines, and that will remain INTC for as far as the eye can see. I can't speak to the transaction costs and quality, there are tech experts on this thread that can address that much better than I.

John

Remember, if you are CPQ you want multiple chip suppliers, and you can then play one off the other for price concessions. That's how it has worked in DRAM, disk drives, etc. All the carnage in those other sectors has been good for the box makers, and I'm sure they would like to see the same in microp's and the OS. Did you read the recent articles on how CPQ wanted to put Netscape Navigator on their desktops, but Microsoft said 'do it and you get WIN95 no more'!!!
