rrman, The typical big power politics against communism resulted in the USA backing assorted thugs. And a thug by any other name is Suharto. The question is; What is better?, the killings by one crooked regime versus another. Our crooked regime versus theirs. Theirs funnels raw materials to the USSR/China and ours to us.
Take your pick. but I vote for us. In a perfect world if they were left alone by us they would also be left alone by others. We do not have a perfect world. One thing I do notice is that eventually the old power system erodes and a democracy ensues with minimal violence. This does not happen with the socialist regimes, as their corruption extends all the way to the bottom from the top, and the systems collapse. Of course Suharto has stolen so much money that the Indos are collapsing. Singapore seems to be OK, as they have minimized the true corruption. Lots of basket cases. Burma, Thailand, Viet-nam, etc.
