Google (GOOG) May Push Tablet Vendors Elsewhere with New Android 4.0 (AAPL) (MSFT)
7:51 am ET 10/20/2011 - Street Insider
Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) recently debuted Android 4.0 -- dubbed 'Ice Cream Sandwich' -- earlier this week, and some tablet vendors feel they might not be getting a sweet deal.

According to reports Thursday, Google unveiled the new system with Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone, with no mention of tablet PC's being made.

Vendors point to the fact that, while the new OS is improved over the last version, it might not be enough to help Android tablets compete more wholly with Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad 2 and upcoming iPad 3.

Complaints Google is lacking R&D personnel have surfaced, leading to lack of support for downstream partners.

So where to go? Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is taking almost the opposite approach and designing it's Windows 8 platform with tablet PC's and touchscreens in mind. Lack of support for Android might be a bull case for Microsoft heading into 2012.
