Software
Speed Surfer 3.2
Speed Surfer Blows Hot and Cold

-- by Amy Helen Johnson

Modem users' demands for faster surfing speed have given rise to a new class of software: Internet accelerators. We tested Speed Surfer 3.2, one of the latest in this category, and found it can increase browser performance, but only with certain types of Web pages.

Speed Surfer seeks to harness your modem's idle cycles by preloading pages that it assumes you might request. Other products, such as Peak NetJet, have tried this same approach without much success, due to a propensity to load adjacent pages while you head in another direction. Speed Surfer avoids that trap by stopping its activity when you request a different page.

Speed Surfer works best on sites with static content. In these instances, the program often doubled our browser's ability to display pages over a 28.8Kb-per-second connection.

However, major Web sites often include an ad banner. Banner advertising is generated from a script, so Speed Surfer can't preload the whole page. On these types of sites, Speed Surfer sometimes actually slowed the download by as much as 30 percent. Similarly, Speed Surfer failed to expedite the delivery of pages created on the fly, such as a listing of search results.

Speed Surfer's straightforward interface lets you change its default browser, set up any necessary network proxies and see which links it's preloading into cache.

Unfortunately, Speed Surfer assumes that you will always use it when browsing. The program acts as a local host proxy; if it's not running, your browser hangs until you manually remove Speed Surfer's proxy option. It would be better if Speed Surfer reset the proxy when it shuts down.

If you're like most Web users, who tend to browse a mix of sites, you're better off avoiding Speed Surfer and its ilk and investing in a faster modem.
