Headline from Rocky Mountain News, 11-19-97:
QUANTUM failure costs 500 jobs

"Storage products maker MKE-Quantum Components wrote the latest chapter in its roller-coaster history Tuesday by announcing it will close its Louisville maunfacturing plant.....

... the new magnetorestive heads ... took to long to get to market, racking up operating losses. .....

... The MR heads were designed and produced on a small scale in Louisville, then rolled out in Shrewsbury and Bataam. "

I understand R&D will remain in Louisville and continue to employ 130 people.

I saw this on a Dow Jones wire story posted on SI. I believe this is factual as I have heard it from several sources -- tho no news release crossed.

On somewhat related notes:

I thought MB of QNTM said they would take a $35m charge for inventory in las cc, but I have been corrected by 2 people who said they heard him say it would be for restructuring. If so all QNTM bad news is out and that, along with Goldman Sachs choosing it on CNBC as one of "top 3 picks" is fueling its recovery.

Clearly QNTM has moved away from the pack and is taking a stock leadership position -- relative strength compared to WDC and SEG.

I was hoping for a bounce from all 3 as we moved into 98, but that may take till May.

I have sold APM and JBIL amid all this nonsense and lost big time.

I am sitting on big % losses in WD and SEG, but much less investd than in QNTM, so I am willing to sit tight.

WD looks dismal right now, but I have no plans to abandon it. It might be interesting if QNTM bot them, but I highly doubt it.
