I am almost done reading Ron Suskinds book about Obama and Wall street. I think the reason he has remained an enigma to so many of us is that he is sort of an engima to himself. E.g. Summers was constantly, almost openly and admitingly, undermining Obama ("we are home alone he told Orzag and others), yet right to the end Obama loved Summers?? No way to reason that out? And he still has Geithner? And he did allow Summers (who is just a blowhard) to insult and run roughshod over guys like Volker and the rest? So part of it may be his natural disposition, part of it being new to the job and part of it not being able to read people well? Who knows. He has terrible relations with the congress. But as he is a dem he will continue to get pressure from the CBC and dems and he is very smart and studied and will not make big mistakes like get us in a nuclear war or put another Scalia on the court. And he does understand technology and esoteric things like economics and modern social theory. He is studied policy wonk.
