A few assorted comments from the Gary Weiss blog regarding Overstock (OSTK): garyweiss Mark, it's always a pleasure hearing from you. I recognize the IP and the thoughtful writing style. The last time we spoke, you misrepresented yourself as being a journalist, lied about not having a specific outlet in mind, and did not disclose that you were working for Byrne at the time. You really are an embarrassment to your former employers and should be ashamed of yourself. As for slimes paying for their crimes, I think Byrne is far more likely to pay, and pay and pay, now that he is being sued for libel, meritoriously, in Canada. Those payments are likely to begin sooner rather than later. As for crimes, if we're talking crimes against the truth -- making stuff up and putting it on the web -- you should be serving ten consecutive life sentences. Unfortunately such a punishment is not possible, so instead we'll just have to see you subjected to the humiliation of a protracted libel suit in a hostile jurisdiction that you will unquestionably lose. Discovery will be something to behold. I know a libel defendant who spent two weeks in depositions that were sheer hell, probing into his private life, and he wasn't making stuff up. What I wonder is this: will Byrne make believe he didn't know you were making stuff up and throw you under the bus? The plaintiff is an incidental character, not one of Byrne's enemies.
