Fromm, another Jew-lol. Having finished Suskind's book, I am back to reading the new book on Einsten by Walter Issacson. It seems like every great thinker in the early 1900's was a Jew-lol. That of course, is why I was always drawn to Jews. I seldom met one who couldn't think well. Their culture demands it and teaches thinking.

What Fromm and the rest of those very perceptive people really did was not so much intellectual gymnastics, though they do that very well, but simply point out the obvious.

My two daughters and I have an intellectual discussion at least once a week. One of the things we discussed this week was thinking outside of yourself.

That was one of Fromm's great thoughts i.e. most of us are so indoctrinated in our own culture we just assume it is natural and operate on an unconscience level as such. Few seldom think of the fact there are thousands of different cultures and there could be an infinite number. So cultures are really nothing more than something we make up. Totally contrived like national boundaries.

Einstein e.g. saw this in his teens.

Most people live their lives within themselves. Everything they do is just a reflection of their world and themselves whether it is their needs and desires or their societies norms and mores.

And a very few people (usually jews I think-lol) can get outside themselves into the infinite world of living in the world of ideas. Why this is not totally obvious to most people mystifies me?
