BusinessWire, Tuesday, November 18, 1997 at 08:08

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 1997--

Home Office Computing, PC Portables Also Salute Networking
Leader for Product Excellence at COMDEX; PC Magazine Gives
Fast EtherLink XL Editor's Choice Award

Global networking leader 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) was
honored by leading industry publications for product excellence at
this year's Fall COMDEX.
Recognizing its commitment to innovation, performance and value,
PC Computing honored 3Com with three MVP awards for the company's
PalmPilot(TM) connected organizer, Sportster(R) 56K(a) voice faxmodem
and 3ComImpact(R) IQ External ISDN modem. In addition, Home Office
Computing honored 3Com's PalmPilot, Sportster(R) line of modems and
OfficeConnect(R) networking kit with Editors' Pick awards.
In related news, PC Magazine in its December 2 issue awarded
3Com's Fast EtherLink(R) XL PCI network interface card (NIC) with its
Editors' Choice award in a round-up review of Fast Ethernet adapters.

PC Computing Honors 3Com with MVP Awards

Relying on extensive reviews of thousands of computer hardware,
software, Internet and networking products, the editors of PC
Computing honored 3Com with three MVP awards, commending the company
for usability, performance, technology, innovation and value.
Saluted as the "top performers in their categories," 3Com received
MVP awards for the following products:

-- Handheld PCs -- PalmPilot Professional
-- High-Speed Fax Modems -- Sportster 56K Voice Faxmodem
-- ISDN Modems -- 3ComImpact IQ External ISDN Modem

For "speed" and the "ultimate in reliability," PC Computing
selected 3Com's Sportster 56K(a) voice faxmodem as the top performer
in the High-Speed Fax Modem category. Using x2(TM) technology for
high speed downloads over regular phone lines, the Sportster 56K(a)
voice faxmodem offers business-quality voice mail with multiple
mailboxes, fax and voice message retrieval from remote locations, and
full-duplex speakerphone capabilities. The product also comes with
RapidComm(TM) voice software -- all the voice mail, data and fax
communications software needed to set up a message center.
Touting the product's 15-minute installation money-back
guarantee, PC Computing states that "ISDN's 128 Kbps access is in
your reach with the 3ComImpact IQ," saluting the product with an MVP
award in the ISDN Modem category. The power-packed 3ComImpact IQ
modem offers customers high-speed access to the Internet and
corporate intranets for easy and fast Web surfing, file transfers,
and e-mail.
Simple to install and connect to an ISDN line, the modem delivers
230 Kbps of throughput, data compression, a SPID (Service Profile
Identifier) Wizard for automatic configuration, and the highest level
of interoperability and standards support.
For its Handheld PCs category, PC Computing designated 3Com's
PalmPilot product as its MVP winner, stating, "all computers should
be this easy." The PalmPilot is the most popular handheld computer
on the market, having shipped more than one million units faster than
any other handheld computing product. Serving as an extension of the
desktop computer, the PalmPilot connected organizer offers users date
and address books, a memo pad, an email application and a backlit
screen for viewing in low-lit situations.

Home Office Computing Honors 3Com with Editors' Pick Awards

Adding to its list of awards, 3Com's PalmPilot connected
organizer received Home Office Computing/Small Business Computing's
Editors' Pick award and PC Portables' Editors' Choice award in the
Handhelds category. Home Office Computing/Small Business Computing
also recognized 3Com's OfficeConnect networking kit and Sportster
line of modems with Editors' Choice awards in its Networking
Solutions/Hardware and Fax/Modem categories, respectively.
Designed for small businesses, 3Com's OfficeConnect networking
kit is a reliable and affordable way to build a network or expand an
existing network. The OfficeConnect networking kit offers the
complete network hardware, cabling and installation documentation
necessary to connect up to three PCs. Offering high speed data, fax
and voice capabilities, 3Com's Sportster line of modems offer speeds
of up to 56Kbps(a) over regular phone lines.

PC Magazine Gives Fast EtherLink(R) XL Editors' Choice Award

As part of a review of 15 network interface card products, 3Com
received an Editors' Choice award for its Fast EtherLink XL PCI
network interface card, commending its straightforward installation,
solid diagnostic tools and lifetime warranty. With easy
installation, top performance and reliability, 3Com's Fast EtherLink
XL NIC supports 10/100BASE-TX and 10/100BASE-T4 (Category 3, 4, and
5 UTP) for the PCI bus and offers 3Com DynamicAccess(TM) software,
which brings intelligence to the edge of the network, optimizing
overall network performance.

Glenn, I have the same worry. I think COMS will miss the number for sure this quarter, simply because the modem sales are slow. It only takes a trip to a Fry's nearby to find out, and no one has raised their hand in my 56k modem purchase survey in both threads (ASND and COMS). What COMS should do, as a marketing gimmick, is to sell its 33.6 modem like crazy and make it software upgradable to any standard (not just x2). There is no double in my mind that both COMS and ASND will double in during the next 12 months, but I may have to unload some of these volatile NW stocks when that happens.

What is the future of 3-COM? All of the cable operators are reluctant to invest in high speed modems for video and data. If 3COM installed their equipment for high speed internet access and charged a rental fee to the user and gave the cable operators a piece of the action,
can you imagine the revenue? This is a mind bogling concept. It
would eliminate 2nd telephone line charges and internet access charges
and roll this into one monthly fee which could be smaller than existing fees the internet user pays. If 3-COM followed this suggestion, the stock would skyrocket regardless of what happens
overseas. 3-COM has the potential to be a big player in this market.

See this weeks BARRONS magazine. Good luck
