Next year's release of Windows NT 5.0 is "so strategic that Microsoft is going to bet the company on it,"

I HOPE NOVELL TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THIS DELAY.

This doesn't say much for Microsoft's ability to deliver software that works, does it? From the MSNBC item that you cited:

"Resellers, OEMs, and other Beta 1 recipients have said the poor quality of the release has made it difficult for them to start developing applications based on the code, and thus have been
eagerly awaiting Beta 2."

"Microsoft has slipped the final delivery date for NT 5.0 multiple
times over the past few years. Earlier this year, Microsoft CEO Bill
Gates was quoted as promising the shipping version of the product
by mid-1998."

"Now, say OEMs and other third parties, Microsoft will be extremely lucky to get the final NT 5.0 product out before the end of 1998."
