Just to clarify. I shouldn't have said Obama / Harper. I should have said US / Canada and for that matter, most other countries.

The FST is a good example. It added taxes to previously non-taxed or lower taxed items like utilities, gasoline, food etc.

Increased tariffs and import taxes are another example as they increase to cost to the consumer.

A small but typical yet to be implemented example: Canadian passports will increase from the current $100 to an estimated $225 next year. The increase is attributed to / justified by the inclusion of a microchip. The chip is estimated to increase the actual cost by less than $5.
