BY TESS STYNES The mood among U.S. consumers turned decidedly darker this month, according to a report released Tuesday, with confidence back to recessionary levels as individuals turn more pessimistic about labor markets.

Separately, U.S. home prices rose modestly in August from a month earlier on seasonal effects, representing the fifth straight monthly increase, according to the Standard & Poor's Case-Shiller home-price indexes.

The Conference Board, a private research group, said its index of consumer confidence plunged to 39.8 in October from a revised 46.4 in September, first reported as 45.4.
