Apple Store revenues are in competition with Apple Store revenues from online. Apple is doing everything in their power to generate more on line sales. New iPhone shipments were sent directly to people's front door, rather than having people wait to pick them up at the store. This spared millions of people from beating down on the Apple store to pick up phones or pre-order them.

Apple gets smarter with each evolution of product launches. Initially, the iPhone launch was the key to get people to visit the Apple store. Last year, people pre ordered their phones on line but picked them up at the store. This year, everything was done around the Mac Store.

I have to think Apple is saving a ton of money on preorders by shipping them directly to the customers at ATT, VZ and Sprint. Same for the carriers too, which don't have to pay commissions for on line orders to the salepeople in their stores. Seems to work better for everyone for the new phone launch. There is simply no way that Apple stores could have accomodated new purchases from all 3 carriers in their retail stores for the first few weeks without disrupting the rest of the business in the Mac Stores.
