From the Propaganda Department of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee: In order to demonstrate the superiority of Chinese socialist democracy and people as the master of the country, all media outlets are to actively publicize local election for representatives of the People’s Congress. Please note: News reports regarding independent candidates or election workshops are strictly prohibited.

I like dealing with mainland China migrants here. They are sharp, smart, entrepreneurial.

Item: a Chinese metal repair shop welded the broken steel swinging metal base of a nice expensive leather chair for $20 cash while I waited. Took about 15 minutes. Nice job, too.

Item: I buy kitchen items like pots, pans, brooms, gadgets, from a Chinese restaurant supply house at wholesale prices to everyone. Restaurant quality is good quality. The other restaurant supply house in Northern Virginia won't let you even enter the place without a wholesale license.

Item: Chinese restaurants that cater to ethnic Chinese have two menus, one for Americanized glop, one for Chinese. When I order off the Chinese menu, the food is excellent. Fresh meat, fresh vegetables, no sugary syrup, no greasy fried coating. Fun to watch my Chinese step-mother ordering. It seems to be confrontational, but the back-and-forth is entertaining.

I will be on the lookout for Chinese shoe repair and other such things. I eat my lunch at my desk, then drive around during lunch time looking for interesting shops in the warehouse district around my office.

Not to single out the Chinese, I have had good experiences with immigrants from India, Viet Nam, Korea, and Latin America. Americans don't know how to fix things anymore.
