Because it can be used as a kind of "weapon" by dorky drop in guests, who have moronic friends (there was a problem with that early in the life of this thread). That's why we don't have it here. It often ends up encouraging uninvited creepy guests. I understand your point of view- but really, the whole recommend thing is divisive even outside of the attack encouraging potential. It can make people feel hurt their posts don't get recommended, when they have made a good point, or a similar point to others. It can start to be a popularity contest. So I don't see the value added myself.

<<<<and they all allowed me to recommend a post, except this one. anyone know why? just wonderin'>>>

My way around this is to give a "tip of the hat" or a "post of the day award" to a post I think is especially good. I don't give it often and it is so subtle that regular posters might not even be aware of this personal compliment that I occasionally give. Come to think of it, it's been awhile now...........

I'll chime in since I started the practice as the first moderator. Not having Recommend buttons also encourages people to make genuine recommendations in real words in a separate post if they are really impressed with something. Much more sincere, IMHO.
