In Canada it is a dirty little secret that sex selection takes place using ultrasound and abortion among the growing Asian and middle eastern communities..... interestingly Canada's sex ratio is higher than the US.. we have a high proportion of Asian folks.. lately especially South Asian who have overtaken the Chinese here handily.. looks like the trend prediction in that study was dead wrong... of course it is over ten years old and wealth must certainly be having an effect in China.. things are still bad but improving... The introduction of ultrasound machines throughout China in the 1990s led to a sex ratio of up to 120:100 at birth due to familial and cultural pressure to have one's only child as a male. Shortly after these facts became known, it became illegal for expectant couples to know the gender of their fetus. Now, the sex ratio at birth in China has been reduced to 111:100.
