Authorized shares - are defined in the company's article of incorporation.
Outstanding/Issued shares - the number of shares issued to people, institutions, funds, etc.
Float - number of shares available to the public - non-restricted, not owned by insiders etc.
You'll see these three terms alot.

Hi Barbara:

The short definition would be those shares that were issued by a company to the public (market makers and ultimately you and me) as compared to other restricted shares that for one reason or another cannot be traded in the stock market.

Every share in cert form counts - there is no such thing as 300 measly shares. Thanks!
