MM's look for reasons to walk the price up and down to their advantage only. If you place a limit order at less than the ask and it is filled, the new bid is lower than the previous bid . As the bid is lowered, so is the ask. This process repeated many times allows the MM's to walk the price down again and again and again. Unless you have level 2 this activity is all transparent and it appears to be panic selling. A few cents saved on the buy can set off an avalanche of selling that becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
