I think kids just want to play. They look at things totally different than adults, which frankly surprised me (since rumor has it I was a kid once). For example, I just asked my son what he thought about the fact his next game is the talk of CT, being broadcast live on MSG Varsity, will be to a packed house, is our Homecoming, etc. and he said "We don't notice the crowd. There could be 10 people in the stands and it wouldn't matter." And he was serious. I know they do read the sports blogs for sh!ts and giggles, but they're in their own world. I'm not sure what happens between now and adulthood that changes all this, although if I had to guess I'd say once you are out in the world you see life more broadly. Bottom line is never assume you are doing what's best for a kid without bothering to ask them. And if you don't ask them, don't expect them to volunteer it.
