I can't tell you whether the election matters or not. But if you don't vote and some conservative gets in, and the Supreme Court composition is changed for years to come, you probably won't look back and think you made the correct decision. No one who gets elected in the US, from the left, is going to be from the fringe- no matter how much the loony right wingers think Obama is some kind of fringe leftist. This country stays to the right, or it goes very mildly left- we do NOT live in a left wing paradise. If you want one of those, you'll have to move- but at least you don't have to move to a sh*thole.

For me, I'll stay here and vote for anyone who isn't on the right. Can't stand the social agenda of the right wingers. There's a lot more I don't like about them, but their social agenda is truly sick making.

what do we do?

Me write-in Obama in the R primary, cuz I can cross-vote this year.

General is undecided. If Bloomberg runs Third Party and doesn't mess with OWS, I'd vote for him.
Otherwise, I'll write in Bernie Sanders and a player to be named later; I think last time it was Russ Feingold.

"does it even matter?"
It makes my heart smile.

<<but koan, what do we do?

You apply the same logic and leave your emotions at home. Voting for a Republican or anyone else could lead to a nuclear war and a worsening of the fascist supreme court, not to mention greatly strengthening teh already entrenched plutocracy.

Obama's two supreme court nominees were fine. I would have preferred a younger vigorous far left Felix Franfurter. But they were both fine moserates and both voted against the citizens United Decision.

We liberals all stood back longer than we would have (e.g. LBJ and the Viet Nam war) wanting to give Obama a fair choice and hoping he was just out thinking us. We now know that was not the case.

But as a democrat, is subject to the pressures of the democratic party and congressional black caucus. So he will be fine, just frustrating e.g. he replaced summers with Alan Kreuger. Outside of Volker, Stiglitz and krugman, Kreuger is among he best.

And the most important thing right now is repealing the citizens United Decision and not allowing another sociopathic right wing appointment to the court. So Obama for four more years and then I think dems will control congress for a long time like during the New Deal, FDR period.
