What are the advantages of being a diverse city?

Tolerance. If everybody around you is the same color, or same religion, you don't develop the tolerance muscles and skills.

US has a long history of racial segregation we are struggling to overcome. Much worse in rural areas than cities. When I was a kid, white and black did not go to the same schools, doctors, hospitals, restaurants. Where I grew up (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), no Latinos, no Asians. The way African Americans were treated was horrible.

In diverse cities like Washington, we accept people from all over the world and treat them as ordinary people. My kids went to school with people from all over the world, speaking more than 90 languages other than English at home.

Washington is still somewhat segregated -- I would say more economic and cultural now. There are still neighborhoods where mostly poor black people live, neighborhoods where mostly poor Latinos live, but no all white neighborhoods anymore. That's progress.

Interesting to have physicians, college professors, researchers from other countries, with different points of view. Example, my ob/gyn was from India. She thought there was nothing wrong with women working through pregnancy because in India, that's what they do. So I did.

Useful to be able to have things fixed by people who come from countries where they still know how to fix things rather than just throw them away and buy something new.

And it's fun. Shopping -- grocery stores and little shops. Fun eating at ethnic restaurants, food trucks. Fun going to festivals, watching parades.
