Damn - just lost the post. Anyway, in summary en.wikipedia.org but ours were just a long piece of bicycle inner tube, with cord on the end and a leather pouch to hold the projectile. We didn't have those sissy Y shanghais with a big handle. [The rest of the post on the psychological reasons for actual wars is lost in Cyberspace, along with some other excellent commentary].
