she wishes for a studio set for the holiday season

Never skrimp on art supplies for this child.

I used to take mine to art supply stores and buy what they wanted. One thing they really liked was moldable colored clay (Sculpey) that they could make into sculptures and bake in the oven. Smells terrible while baking but some of the creations were good enough to keep forever. They also liked making sculptures from plaster of Paris.

We still have professional quality Windsor Newton paints, sable brushes, cold pressed paper, easel. Painting wasn't something they really got interested in. I am thinking about donating to the local Art League, or maybe saving for hypothetical grandchildren.

Funny what kids will take to. Before older son was born I bought a really big, beautiful set of polished wooden building blocks that fit into a large wooden cart with wheels, because that was something I would have loved as a child. It cost about $300 in 1985. They hardly ever used it. It is a cliche that children love to play with shipping boxes, but my kids loved the boxes that appliances came in, refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, drier, best of anything. They turned them into race cars, space ships, time machines.

They also loved Lego. Younger son made a Mom Control out of Lego, sort of like a TV remote, if he pushed a button I was supposed to make lunch, or take him to the park, or read him a story, or give him a kiss, etc. I wanted to save it forever but he got embarrassed when he got a little older, found where I had hidden it in my closet, and took it apart.
