[promises]

<< It was Amati who promised to license on a fair and equitable basis. Is TI bound by the same constrictions? >>

IMO, yes. AMTX didn't make the promise in a vacuum; it was a precondition to AMTX's patents being incorporated into the ANSI standard for DMT. i'll venture to guess AMTX has signed a letter of commitment to ANSI to honor those terms. TXN would inherit that commitment and be bound by it as they'd be bound by all of AMTX's contracts.

[ORCTF]

<< Not sure about Orckit. I still don't like the fact they haven't licensed... >>

agree, but offer these points:

1) ADSL is a big pie and ORCTF will get a slice
2) one of the few remaining pure plays in xDSL
3) up-and-comer in the HDSL space
4) VDSL
5) attractive buyout candidate for LU, Fujitsu, or PAIR
6) not strapped for cash

if ORCTF has been bluffing about not needing AMTX patents in order to be standards compliant, TXN will call the bluff in a second once the deal is closed. i expect ORCTF to licence just before the Fujitsu ADSL chips are ready.
