Well, koan, right now the way Social Security and Medicare is structured, it is a very good deal for the old and the retiring Baby Boomers. No question about that. However, if it continues the way it is now, it will literally bankrupt this country and the next two generations will see their lives impoverished as a result.

False dilemma. Make a few relatively insignificant changes and SS is good. It has been a great program. I know a half dozen people who are 70'ish that would be homeless with out it. Immediately. They would likely die in an alley somewhere. They are not living it up it's subsistence survival. And they paid in all their lives with the express promise from out government that they would get benefits at age 65.

MM, I think your premise is wrong.

I told you social security was good for the next 26 years and if they just took the cap off it would be good for 75 years.

So what are you talking about? You must address that fact.

Secondly, every other western democracy has provided universal health care. We can to, but we cannot do it with everyone in the medical industry getting overpaid and private insurers getting 40% overhead.

If we had universal health care and a public option and competitive drug prices and a few other changes we would be fine.

I spent a large portion of my life putting health care systems together and running them.

You are drinking the right wings kool aid of "can't do". It is a ruse by the private industry to keep stealing our money by denying fair social serivces to people.

<<You OK with letting the aged suffer?

So the question isn't "you ok with letting the aged suffer?" Rather, the question is "are you ok with stealing the livelihood of the next two generations and letting them suffer in order to let the old folks live large today?"
