If it was designed properly, it would have built in tagging the retirement age to statistical average longevity of people. However, it didn't do that, did it? Or better yet, it would have designed the program to put people's contributions into an account with their own name on it. Later, payments would be made to them until their account was exhausted. Either of those two methods would have resulted in a solvent, sustainable system. However, we have neither of those.

We have a system that paid out on average 2-3 years of payments when Roosevelt created it. Now we have a system that pays out 20-25 years of payments, because people are living longer. Roosevelt didn't anticipate that and it is now on the path to causing this country serious economic stress.

Look. This is like religion. I know I'm never going to convince any Democrat of my beliefs on SS. So there's no point trying. Honestly, I'm less concerned about SS and Medicare than I am about the crony capitalism of recapitalizing banks by stealing from the 99%. That's where my major beef with the GOP and Democrats both is.
