remember getting my social security card (and first job) at 15. I was very proud, and so were my very Republican parents. People believed in SS very much through most of my life; they thought it was a very good thing that America had eliminated destitution, which had been common, for the elderly. Pride in America.

And yes I paid into SS that summer of 1964 and with every terrible and great job since. I never cared that I was supporting someone else's patents then, or helping to support my patents later. It was something bigger than me and I knew that I would get my share if lucky enough to live that long.

Very well said. I tip my hat. It is this compassion and pride in this country that was very instrumental in my freely choosing as the country I want to live and die in in spite of not being being in a position to choose this country as the country of my birth.

"I never cared that I was supporting someone else's patents then, or helping to support my patents later."

For an embarrassingly long time, I believed I was paying into some sort of retirement account! I also thought there was no cap!

When I found out I was paying my parents SS, I was fine with it. When I found out there was a cap, it was when I PASSED it ( I actually went to personnel, thinking there was a mistake on my check) , and I was SHOCKED! It just seemed so UNFAIR.
