My Sexual Harassment Reprimand

[ No, not mine ... this is Charles Martin writing. ]

Back in the early 90's, I was teaching at Durham Technical Community College while I was in grad school.

One day, one of my students, who normally wore sweats and jeans — as I did — came in wearing hose and heels, a cute denim skirt, and a white-and-aqua sweater with silver threads in it.

I said “Nice outfit! That’s a pretty sweater.”

The next day, I was seeing the Dean in Charge of Spanking Lecturers. Seems I’d said “something offensive”. She couldn’t tell me who had complained so I could apologize, what I’d said, as that might identify who had complained, but that I’d better apologize tout suite and I’d better watch myself.

Remember that when you hear about Herman Cain.

I do think there have been incidents in my own career when I could have been charged with making someone uncomfortable. I recall once many years ago sitting in the office with a couple women who worked for me - one of them young and 'built' and on that particular day wearing a tight sweater. I was talking and thinking about what I was saying when I suddenly realized my eyes were unconsciously (really!) focused directly on the chest of the one in the tight sweater. Could I have gotten a complaint about that? Maybe ... especially if the woman had been thinking about leaving her job anyway ... why not get a lawyer and walk away with a bit more?

I like Cain.
But his attempts to cover this up, or put a lid on it, are amateurish.

He's probably not a class A horndog or rapist, like Clinton, but I get the impression he's not exactly innocent either. It's only a matter if time before these women are discovered or come forward.
