The Republican National Committee wasted no time trying to score political points from former Gov. Jon Corzine's woes, issuing a news release about a presidential fund-raiser earlier this year as his investment firm filed bankruptcy.

Corzine helped raise $2 million for President Obama and the Democratic Party at a private 60-person event in his Fifth Avenue apartment in New York City. It was part of an administration effort to rebuild bridges with Wall Street contributors.

"Obama has had a lot to say about Occupy Wall Street but probably won't say anything about Jon Corzine," the news release said Monday.

Corzine and MF Global associates Bradley Abelow and Joseph Patt each gave $35,800 to Obama Victory Fund 2012 in May, the month when the event at Corzine's home was held, public records show.

"I'm sure the folks in the White House are sweating this a little bit," said Tom Wilson, a lobbyist who served as Republican State Committee chairman during Corzine's administration.

"If it were any other hedge fund guy, it wouldn't be as serious, but because the Obama administration and Democrats across the board said the Bush administration took a lax attitude on Wall Street, they have to be making sure that all the I's were dotted and the T's were crossed here," Wilson said.
