(Morpho) of Tacoma, announced the successful installation of its automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) for the Procuraduria General de Justicia Distrito Federal (PGJDF) of Mexico. It is Morpho's first law enforcement AFIS installation in Latin America. The PGJDF, which is the Federal district attorney's office, replaced its nine-year-old Printrak system with the Morpho AFIS. According to Dr. Pedro Estrada Gonzalez, General Director of Expert Services for the PGJDF, the new system's technological advances allow the PGJDF to be on the leading edge of national investigation. "In five months, the Morpho system produced a positive identification in 53 cases, which is far greater than the average rate of identification using the old method," attests Dr. Gonzalez. "Our fingerprint experts are enthusiastic about having such an effective tool at hand to help with their important investigative work." Three Morpho FlexScan workstations were installed in March at PGJDF headquarters in Mexico City. "The system was so well received," says Morpho president and CEO Jean-Marc Suchier, "that in September the PGJDF ordered twelve additional workstations for installation throughout the city, including six workstations designed for capturing fingerprint images without ink." Sunnyvale, California-based Identix, Incorporated (AMEX:IDX) supplied its FBI-certified TouchPrint 600(tm) live optical-scan technology for integration with Morpho's fingerprint capture workstations. Identix's live-scan technology does away with the traditional, but messy and significantly less-accurate process of inking and rolling fingerprints. Live-scan workstations use digital cameras to scan a person's fingertips and convert what the camera "sees" to digital representations of the finger images. These digital representations are stored, then transmitted to Mexico's Morpho AFIS for nearly-instant identification. Identix Chairman, President, and CEO Randall C. Fowler says that the PGJDF project "represents one more example of our technology meshing with Morpho's in a critical application where speed, accuracy, operation ease, and dependability are paramount. Our valued relationship with Morpho over the past few years has seen a variety of such applications, ranging from law enforcement to public assistance verification systems." Morpho also developed a business relationship with Image Technology Company of Mexico City. As a subcontractor, Image Technology Company assists Morpho with user training and maintenance support. A high-technology imaging corporation, Morpho is a leading provider of biometric technology and automated fingerprint identification systems for state and local government agencies in North America. Morpho's products are used in a variety of security applications worldwide, including law enforcement, document security, and national defense. Morpho is also a member of the team that is developing an AFIS system for the FBI. The company currently employs 178 people throughout the United States. Morpho is a subsidiary of SAGEM, a major French telecommunications, electronics, defense, and security corporation headquartered in Paris.
