Rod; At the heart is the operating system. If they come up with an operating system like, say OS2, which runs on all platforms, and runs all programs like OS@, WIN95-8, and NT? But can they do this?. There will be many tiny apps and a few somewhat bigger, but a full paralel universe?
It will be an interesting few years. One thing, can they come up witha standard Java? You recall how Unix ran off in 10 different directions as each group wanted to make it unique to them for fee generating purposes? Some got big but most went broke. We are seeing some of this with the Microsoft lawsuit. Can SUN keep the disparate members in line?. The Microsoft lawsuit shows they are trying to implement some discipline.
