Not really like taking a train because trains involve extra journeys at each end. Autocar would go door to door. Much faster, much more pleasant, much cheaper, much more comfortable and personal. <True.. it'll take the fun out of it... (driving) but mostly it's not fun.. it would be more like taking the train, having a snack and surfing the net.. or just resting... > Even with such innovation now in demonstration mode there are still the loony public transporters who love steel wheels on steel tracks which can go nowhere except point to point. Dinky little cars can go anywhere to anywhere. I liked steam engines and trains too, but the 19th century is not the way into the 21st.

Autocar would be more like catching a taxi, but one without a driver.

It wasn't really all that much fun driving a car at 70 mph along 401 heading for Ottawa from Cornwall with huge amounts of snow on the road and everywhere else and -20 degrees Celsius outside. It would be much better to be a passenger in a car doing the hard work. Though driving in snow is fun at times too. It's easy to play skidding in circles with the handbrake on. Fun is good. Mainly though, getting from A to B is the name of the game, or enjoying the scenery which is not so doable while making sure the car in front doesn't stop, the ditch doesn't approach and oncoming vehicles don't try the other side of the road.
