Douglas, ASIC = Application-Specific Integrated Circuit. In other
words, it's a chip developed for a particular function. I don't
see ASIC being a big threat to IxWorks for I2O for the simple
reason that ASICs can't be reprogrammed after the fact. If the
I2O standard evolves to include additional functionality, the
ASIC solution would be obsolete, and would need to be replaced, in
order to gain the new capabilities. IxWorks, on the other hand, is
a completely general solution that can be upgraded at any time via
software. ASICs may have a place in VERY high-volume, low-cost I2O
products, but even that senario is not likely to exist until I2O
is a completely mature standard.

Hope this helps!
