These kinds of blanket assertions can't account for the Krugman's, the Frank Rich's, more than a few NYTimes reporters, some who write for the Atlantic Monthly (I'm thinking of James Fallows as I write, but it could also be said of Andrew Sullivan; the list could be quite long). If you meant to exclude commentators from your generalization then it makes a bit more sense. But the do differ and the agendas of their bosses differ across newspapers and as between different editors. The NYTimes went after Bill Clinton but only because the then editor pushed it. Hard.
