The market share of Android phones continued its upward march, evidenced by numbers released by comScore on Friday. RIM, meanwhile, continued its decline.

A day Nielsen released its own analysis, comScore said that the total number of U.S. mobile subscribers using Android climbed to 44.8 percent in September, a gain of 4.6 percentage points versus June. That represents a 1.1 percent increase since August, according to comScore.

Apple also gained share, as iOS now represents 27.4 percent of the total, an increase of 0.8 percentage points since June and 0.1 percentage points since August.

However, the gains in both Android and iOS were offset by drops in the market share of RIM, Windows Mobile and Symbian. RIM was especially hard hit, with a 4.6-point decline to 18.9 percent. RIM dipped 0.8 percentage points in a month. Microsoft's share fell 0.2 points to 5.6 percent (0r 0.1 points since August) and Symbian now commands 1.8 percent, down 0.2 percent since June.

Samsung continued to dominate as the largest manufacturers, both in smartphones and feature phones combined. Samsung's share remained flat at 25.3 percent, with LG (20.6 percent, down 0.7 percent since June) and Motorola (13.8 percent, down 0.7 percent) trailing behind. Apple recorded a 1.3 percentage point increase since June to finish at 10.2 percent. RIM was fifth, down 0.8 points to 7.1 percent.

comScore's numbers are based on a study of 30,000 mobile subscribers.

Google’s Android was the only mobile operating system to expand its U.S. market share in the third quarter, according to Thursday figures from Nielsen.

Android increased its market share to 43 percent, up from 39 percent in the second quarter. Apple’s iOS remained flat at 28 percent; Research in Motion’s BlackBerry decreased to 18 percent from 20 percent during the quarter, while Microsoft’s Windows Phone and Windows Mobile platforms slid to 7 percent from 9 percent. Combined in the "other" category, Nokia's Symbian OS and HP's webOS are found in 4 percent of U.S. smartphones.
