<<Question?-- My wife retired from one of the bell co. She said they were using 56k modems a couple of years ago. What kind of modem would the bell system use to achieve 56k before it came out? Thanks.>>

Oliver, your wife was probably thinking about proprietary syncronous
56K modem or possibly CSU/DSU's which many bell people consider as
modem which they are but don't realize the difference between async
and channel service units.

Oliver:

I worked for Mtn. Bell as long as fifteen years ago and even at that time we were using 56K modems in ISS. They were, however, proprietary async modems installed on dedicated circuits with a higher bandwidth than your typical 2 pair POTS line. The gyrations involved in X2 and K56flex have to do with trying to squeeze 56K into the bandwitdth limit of POTS--a technical slight-of-hand to say the least.
